The brief that cannot stop

A school committee's hardest brief is not a new building. It is a new building around a running one. Classes cannot pause for construction, fees are collected against a functioning campus, and the committee is spending collected fees on a project that must not interrupt the income that funds it.

In 2021 the practice took on exactly that at Mass Paramedical College, Amrauli: an existing single-floor 10+2 school building, refactored into a paramedical college of twenty-five thousand square feet across two floors, on a ten-thousand-square-yard plot.

What the recorded project actually contained

The record lists the scope the way the committee experienced it. An existing building taken up a floor and re-planned. A back-side hostel added, so the college could hold students from outside the city. Two main gates at the front, separating the arrival of the college from the arrival of everything else. And a U-shaped road running to the college's main gate, which is less romantic than it sounds: it is the difference between an ambulance, a bus and a parent's car all arriving at the same door, or not.

None of that is architecture in the magazine sense. All of it is the committee's real brief: a campus that works on the day it opens, with the old school still inside it.

The method, stated generally

Committee projects fail on sequencing more than on design. The method that worked here generalises.

Build in the campus's off-season, not the calendar's. Hostel and back-block work runs while the front building teaches; the front building's work waits for the break.

One gate, one function. The two-gate decision did more for the campus than any elevation: construction traffic, student arrival and visitor arrival stopped being one confused crowd.

Never close a working block for cosmetic work. The running school's dignity is part of the brief. Parents judge a future college by the school they can see today.

Stage the payments to the construction, not the promise. Committee funds arrive in tranches; the engagement's stage structure on how we work maps to them, so the drawings never run ahead of the money or behind the site.

The crisis that is not in this entry yet

There was a moment on this campus that belongs in this entry, a crisis that tested the method. It is deliberately not written here: the practice's rule is that a story publishes when the client's consent for it is recorded, and that conversation with the trust is pending. The building, the scope and the method are published because they are facts of record. The dramatic part waits for permission.

For committees planning the same move

Bring three things to the first meeting: the existing building's actual measured drawings, the academic calendar, and the committee's payment reality. The design conversation is easy after those. The work archive holds the practice's other institutional buildings, from Krishna International School to a 2026 coaching fit-out, and the deliverables per stage are on what you receive.
